It runs perfectly for me finally, and I don't have to do this complicated thing at all, just run the installer with wine and it works. The Wine team has been working hard to make it as seamless as possible and now WinSCP is in the state that it's very runnable.
A bit of LLM help and you I could setup SSH authentication and custom editor too
for custom editor on edit files, use this command:
C:\windows\command\start.exe /Unix /home/YOUR_USERNAME/.wine/launch_editor.sh !.!
and in the .sh script, for example Sublime:
#!/bin/bash
# Convert the Windows path (assuming it starts with something like 'C:\')
unix_path=$(echo "$1" | sed -e 's/\\/\//g' -e 's/^C://')
# Launch gedit with the converted path
/opt/sublime_text/sublime_text "/home/YOUR_USERNAME/.wine/drive_c$unix_path" &
or ZED:
#!/bin/bash
# Convert the Windows path (assuming it starts with something like 'C:\')
unix_path=$(echo "$1" | sed -e 's/\\/\//g' -e 's/^C://')
# Launch
zeditor "/home/YOUR_USERNAME/.wine/drive_c$unix_path" &
you get the idea. Oh and don't forget to
chmod +x on the script of course
for ssh authentication:
in the
SSH > Authentication for a server set private key file to
Z:\home\YOUR_USERNAME\.ssh\putty.ppk
then install
PuTTY via your package manager and inside your
.ssh dir do this with your key
puttygen id_rsa -o putty.ppk
The only issue you might have is that it will not behave nicely with "stealing" focus when you open file via WinSCP (normally the icon of your editor would start blinking), but if you install something that lets apps take focus it works fine. For example, on Gnome you could get
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/3843/just-perfection/ extension, or
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/5410/grand-theft-focus/. What's annoying about WinSCP itself though is that it will popup notification on every server disconnect, so you have to
Alt+Tab from that (seriously, that popup was never helpful win Windows neither, I have no idea why is it a popup). But there's already voting for making this configurable so let's hope that one day it will get implemented
Issue 2360 – Optionally do not show error message when connection is lost while idle.
By the way now that Linux is going more and more into mainstream since latest Windows is a privacy nightmare I expect more and more people asking for Linux native version lol.
