There was indeed a change to remote Type column sorting in 5.5.4:
Issue 1158 – Sorting by type is not consistent between local and remote panel
It now sorts by Type, Extension and Name. In most cases the change should have no effect as typically files with same Type have the same Extension.

Sorting
Sort by Type use to Sort Type and Name. It seems anything after 5.5.3 only sorts Type and puts files out of alphabetical order.
Hope this can be fixed.
