Functionless WinSCP-made shortcuts

Hello there,

first of all i do not know if it is a bug, maybe it is a way the WinSCP works.

CONCRETE ISSUE:

The situation: i want to make a link of WAV file to a different folder, and the link on this shortcut i want to play on the internet browser.

I found that it does not work with the default WinSCP shortcuts. I can make the shortcut to the destionation folder, yes. But this shortcut can not be played in internet browser. My friend he has Linux server where the data (WAV) are located. It is confirmed that the shortcut works on browsers if he create this on his server.

To make WinSCP shortcuts to work properly i need to edit them. The default WinSCP shortcuts do not work (i.e. they can not be played in internet browsers), they give the error 403 "Forbidden".

To make the WinSCP work properly i need to edit the shortcut's path "Link/shortcut poiting at": I have to delete the path and replace it only with "../myfolder/FILE.WAV". After this it works.

So, can you update it and correct this, please? It will help a lot if the default WinSCP will be playable on internet browsers.

Thank you.

GENERAL COMPLAINT:

Anyway, working with shortcuts in WinSCP is very cumbersome.

I did expect that it WinSCP will offer similar function to create shortcuts as the Total Commander - the best and easiest way for creating and managing shortcuts -> single click on the button and you have it. In WinSCP i have to copy/paste everything i.e. i have to copy the path of destination first (it means to find it and copy it and than go back to the directory with the file) and paste it to the "File with link/shortcut" box, plus copy there the file name. Everything is manual in WinSCP ->t is not productive. I have hundreds of files for which i want to create shortucts. So it is obvious that it will be a work for several hours...

So, do you plan to update and simplify work with shortcuts, please? I would like to see the way of creating shortcuts via the button "make a shortcut". But of course, it will demand the ability of two windows of one server location: 'server window' against 'server window'. Now it is possible to have only 'personal window (my PC/notebook/etc)' against 'server window'.

Is there any will or even concrete plans to change it? I will really really really appreciate any progress on this.

Thanky you.

First, by shortcut, I assume you mean a Linux symbolic link, right?

Can you explain, what is wrong about the links created by WinSCP? Are you saying that the links with absolute paths somehow do not work on your server? Why is that? And why is that a problem of WinSCP?

Re: Functionless WinSCP-made shortcuts

I am an end user. My colegue he has a Linux server where are the data located. I do not know details about that. I just know that on Linux the 'shortcuts' works different than in Windows. The Linux shortcut does not need .lnk equivalent suffix. The Linux shortcut has the same value as the original file.

So by shortcut i mean the WinSCP function "New > Link (Alt+F6)".

I already described the problem. The original WinSCP-made shortcut does not not work in the way i can play the shortcut pointing at WAV (for example) file on internet browser. I need to edit it. The original path of exported shortcut (such as: /sever/documets/myfolder/FILE.WAV) in the "Link/shortcut pointing at" box i have to replace on ../myfolder/FILE.WAV. After it works -> i can play the shortcut in web browser.

My second complaint was about cumbersome work with shortcuts in WinSCP. It will be great to make it similar how it works in Total Commander (TC). In TC i can mark hundreds files and with single click i can create shortcuts for all those files. In WinSCP it is a process for hours... I know that WinSCP is not TC and never will be, and that is ok. But for my intention to work a lot with shortcuts i would like to see some kind of update. I tried to described it - see my mention about to allow two 'server windows' against each other + plus make the button for creating shortcuts.

<- This solution could help a lot!

I understand that. But why is that a problem of WinSCP? It seems that the web server for some reason cannot process the absolute symbolic links. Probably because it does not have an access to some root/parent folders. WinSCP cannot know that.

I'll see if other users ask for improvements of working with links.
A request for two remote panels is tracked here:

(though it's unlikely to be implemented any time soon)

Re: Functionless WinSCP-made shortcuts

I have got in touch with the server guy. He confirmed me that his server does not give an 'absolute way' for the links, only the 'relative one' (because of the security; and no one on shared server will give it to the end user). So he mention one easy solution: to implement in WSCP the setting to select "absolute" or "relative" way for creating of new shortcuts. YES, this will help! I please for this feature. Because now i am stuck: i have to repair MANUALLY EVERY SINGLE shortcut -> i have to convert it from 'absolute' to 'relative' way... The WinSCP feature setting will resolve this easily.
- I will translate this feature to "Feature Requests".

Well, i know that each one might have different priorities. But i believe that the two-pannel GUI of the same session could be nice feature leading to much productive work with WinSCP! I work in Windows enviroment with TC only, and the ability of two pannel session i miss a lot in WinSCP. Let's hope you will find the time to push it forward;)

Thanks!
