Apostrophe in name throws "External Exception EEFFACE" sync

If a Synchronize operation is attempted on a directory which contains either a file or a directory whose name contains an apostrophe ('), then the operation fails with a "External Exception EEFFACE" popup dialog.

Client: WinSCP 4.0.6 build 358 on WinXP SP2.
Server: Linux
Protocol: Either SFTP or SCP

Can you provide me your email address, so I can send you a debug version of WinSCP to track the problem? If you do not want to post the address here, you can send me an email. You will find it (if you log in) in my forum profile. Please include link to this topic. Thanks.

Yes. I just had the problem. But, I closed the file and tried to save again and there was no problem. For the developers, teh file did not contain apostrophes or any other characters.

Do you know what causes the problem?

No. Can you reproduce the problem?

No. Luckily, it hasn't happened since then. Thanks for the follow-up, though.

I can reproduce this

I stumbled across this while working, but seem to be able to reproduce this

I've opened a remote file on a server (pressed F4) to edit in an external editor (Context)

Then I started a long transfer of files from the remote to my computer. While this was in progress, I edited the temporary copy of the file in my external editor and saved.

Any time I save I get this error, so long as the transfer from the remote is working.

Has this anything to do with the apostrophe, which is this thread about? Or does it happen for any file?

I'm working on a training script, WinSCP as the FTP, Notepad++ as the text editor. NP++ is set as the default text editor in this case. Every time I try to save a file it is not saving the file and instead throws up the error:

External Exception EEFFACE

This has no apostrophe in the file it's self, WinSCP is set to Binary Transfer, running in SFTP on Port 22 with a VPS Server from HFW. Server is a Linux running php5.2.9 with Mysql 4.2.? and an Apache Handler.

I've had this pop up about 20 times so far today. Will close out all files. Shut it all down and bring it back up, see if the error clears or still persists.

Can you send me an email, so I can send you back a debug version of WinSCP to track the problem? Please include link back to this topic in your email. Also note in this topic that you have sent the email. Thanks.

You will find my address (if you log in) in my forum profile.

I've been getting this message error for some days with Version 5.2.0, but not immediately after I upgraded to this version: External exception EEFFACE. It happens with random files, downloaded from the same folder to the same folder as others which do not report the error. I read in this topic that an apostrophe in the name of the folder might cause this, and I was downloading into a folder that contained ñ. I removed it and it kept happening. Furthermore, it has happened with folders that had no special characters in their names. I thought that the route might have been too long and I tried downloading the files into a partition unit, but the error kept occurring. Any idea of what may be wrong?

Thanks for your report.
I have sent you an email with a debug version of WinSCP to address you have used to register on this forum.
